Facing Fukushima - Route 399 Iitate Village Fukushima Directly facing the damaged reactors of the Fukushima Diachi complex more than 30 kilometers away this mountain top rest area. Iitate believed to receive a direct hit of radioactive contamination on the night of March 15 during a Snow squall which formed while the fires in the spent fuel pond of near Unit 4 were burning out of control, is believed to have been the primary cause of spreading increased radiation levels around Fukushima and beyond.
